Avant Kinema

Avant Kinema are Sarahjane Swan & Roger Simian, an experimental duo based in the Scottish Borders. We collaborate on film, music, art and writing under the name Avant Kinema. Our films have screened throughout the UK, Europe, and several times on US experimental cable access show Here Comes Everybody, as well as throughout the Toronto Subway System. We were shortlisted for the Edinburgh International Film Festival’s Short Film Challenge in 2016 and had a new Super 8 short included in EIFF’s Walk With Us event in July 2019. We have received grants for our filmmaking from Creative Scotland, the South of Scotland VACMA (Visual Artists and Craft Makers Awards) and The Hope Scott Trust. Our music – under the name The Bird And The Monkey – has been aired widely on BBC Radio, with one track used in the soundtrack for BBC2 drama, The Cut, in 2011.
